Safer downloads and a cautious expansion of site pre-caching land in Chrome 17 today, continuing Google's two-tiered approach to browser speed and user safety.

As revealed in the Chrome 17 beta version, Chrome's safe browsing technology will now scan downloads as well as Web sites. It looks for known malware files, and it analyzes installation files starting with Windows-based EXE and MSI. Google hasn't clarified if the scan will later include other Windows-based file types or installers from Mac and Linux operating systems. If a file is suspected of being malicious, meaning that it doesn't match a whitelist, Chrome will check it against Google's search index to see if the site you're downloading it from hosts a high number of known malicious downloads. If it determines the download to be unsafe, Chrome will barf up a red warning page.

Speed has always been a focus of Chrome's developers, and in version 17 the browser extends the site pre-caching feature to the location bar Omnibox. If you have pre-caching activated in Settings, it will pre-load the first site that autocompletes its URL to a site you're likely to visit. If you choose that site, it will appear to load instantaneously.

Google today released a beta version of its Chrome browser for Android, a momentous step that marries two of Google's most important programming projects.

Among the features in the browser:

The browser shows multiple tabs like overlapping pages when you tap the tabs button. Swiping one of the pages to one side or the other close it in much the same way that you can sweep away notifications on Ice Cream Sandwich. Once you click a page, it expands to fill the whole screen, at which point you can switch to new pages by sliding your finger from one edge or the other.
The browser can preload pages in advance when Google has high confidence that you'll likely tap its link. That means pages don't have to wait so much for the network.
Chrome for Android has hardware acceleration for tasks such as scrolling. It also uses it for slick visual feedback effects like browser tabs.
It supports a wide range of Web standards, including Web Workers for multiple computing processes, Web Sockets for fast server-browser communciations, HTML5 video and audio, and IndexedDB for offline storage.
The browser is rejiggered for tablets. "On tablets, we realize consumers expect a similar experience to what they get on a laptop," Pichai said, so for example the tab strip looks like what you'd see on a personal computer.
You can synchronize data such as bookmarks and Web address autocomplete suggestions with your desktop browser, with passwords arriving in a later upgrade. As with Firefox for Android, tabs you had open on your laptop or desktop can be opened from a list in Chrome for Android. To use sync, you must be signed into your Google account.
The browser has incognito mode that doesn't leave traces such as cached images, cookies, and browsing history on the phone. It's walled off into a separate stack of tabs; if any incognito tabs are open, you can move between them and the ordinary stack of tabs by tapping the tab button and then tapping the appropriate stack.
Programmers can use their PCs to remotely debug Web pages that don't work properly on Chrome for Android. A command on the PC will open the mobile browser's Web pages for scrutiny.

The new browser, unlike the stock Android browser, is available in the Android Market so that people don't have to wait for handset makers to offer it through an operating system upgrade. But its reliance on newer hardware acceleration interfaces means it only works on Ice Cream Sandwich, which despite emerging last year on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone remains a rarity in the real world.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus would have made a more lasting impression on us as the first Android handset from Samsung for the year, if it wasn't for the almost insignificant upgrades from its predecessor. A year later we get the same design, lousy HVGA resolution on a slightly larger screen, and the obligatory 1GHz CPU. Its biggest problem is the price though. While it is about the same as the original Ace, a year later the market can offer lots of alternatives. And there are better phones for roughly the same money – models that were more expensive but got affordable as they got older.

While Google has been getting the lion's share of press for porting popular mobile game apps to HTML5, most notably with Angry Birds, they're not the only company pushing the limits of the future-Web tech. During CES 2012, Microsoft's chief marketing officer for Windows Tami Reller took a moment to play a quick round of Cut the Rope in Internet Explorer.

To play the game, simply go to CutTheRope.ie. It ought to work in any browser that supports HTML5, although apparently in Firefox Microsoft has shifted the audio components to Flash. The Internet Explorer developers noted on their behind-the-scenes site that some Google Chrome bugs, as well as Firefox, prevented full HTML5 implementation. Interestingly, I encountered no problems playing the game in Firefox 11 Aurora. This isn't surprising, as HTML5 standards have yet to be finalized and the five major modern browsers are quickly adding support.

The game was ported with support from ZeptoLab and Pixel Lab, the makers of Cut the Rope, as part of Microsoft's Beauty of the Web initiative, which showcases their changes to Internet Explorer to make it modern and competitive. Using the site pinning feature in Internet Explorer 9, you can unlock an extra seven levels to bring the total to 25 that you can nom your way through.

After the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Galaxy R, it's time to have a look one step down the ladder – to the midrange Samsung GALAXY W. On paper, the phone has it all to be a decent Android handset and the design, while nothing remarkable, has some interesting curves to flaunt. Does it hit the sweet value for money spot that its category is meant to conquer?

Overall, the Samsung GALAXY W lives up to the expectations for its category with its comfortable design, decent pictures and video, rich codec support, strong loudspeaker and plenty of preinstalled goodies like Polaris Office and AllShare. The 3.7-inch LCD display should be commended as well since it delivers some eye-pleasing graphics thanks to its high pixel count. On top of all that, the internet browsing experience is complemented by Adobe Flash support meaning that you can enjoy the web to its fullest, powered by the 1.4GHz processor. The things that we didn't like about the GALAXY W were the below average call quality in the earpiece, and the sometimes slow to focus camera. The first flaw especially might be a hindrance, since the handset will fight for attention in an overcrowded Android category.

Sporting a retuned Unity interface, new and improved features, and even some new applications Ubuntu 11.10 certainly promises a lot – but does it live up to the hype?

Ubuntu 11.10 – minor, but major
Ubuntu 11.10 builds upon the groundwork laid in Ubuntu 11.04. Whilst there are many changes within Ubuntu 11.10 they are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. But that’s not a bad thing, for example the Unity interface has matured into a dependable and intuitive work tool; the default application set has been rethought; and the new login screen ‘fits’ the overall style of the Unity desktop. All relatively minor or subtle changes on their own by all add up to a greater cohesive whole.

Unity Changes
The changes to Unity are apparent from the get go. The Dash is now opened by a launcher icon. Lenses have been integrated into the Dash itself, and sport many changes including faster loading times, improved results, and new filtering options – all of which make finding your applications and files easier.Amongst the Lens changes comes the addition of a new ‘Music Lens’. With this one can browse locally available music as well as that available to buy via the Ubuntu One Music Store. Clicking on a track you have, or don’t have, opens up the default music player Banshee.

Looks
The default Ubuntu themes (the dark ‘Ambiance’ and the lighter ‘Radiance’) look all the better from their port to GTK 3.

New Default Apps
Ubuntu comes with the most important of software pre-installed.

Firefox 7 is the default web browser, giving you access to a whole world of add-ons and extensions.

For office-suite needs Ubuntu provides the Microsoft Office compatible LibreOffice suite – word processor, spread sheet and database apps all included.
Mozilla Thunderbird replaces Evolution as the default e-mail application. This is a breeze to set up with web-based e-mail accounts: just enter your details and Thunderbird does the complicated stuff for you. Keep an eye on the launcher icon for unread mails.
Shotwell photo manager gives you intuitive management and basic editing of your photos, as well as supporting uploads to Flickr, Facebook and other social sites.
Special mention goes to Ubuntu’s default social client ‘Gwibber’, which has been totally revamped. Now lighter, more responsive and sporting a slicker interface it’s a joy to use for reading your Tweets or updating your Facebook status.
Backing up is important, so Ubuntu provides the ‘Deja Dup’ backup tool by default. Head to System Settings > Back Up to set up backups of you important files on to a separate hard drive, partition, or even Ubuntu One.
Banshee music player, with integrated Ubuntu One music store; Totem movie player; and Tomboy notes, with Ubuntu One syncing, are also included out of the box.
Six games are pre-installed, including perennially popular titles like Mines and Mahjong. For more advanced/challenging titles head on into the Ubuntu Software Centre.
On the flip side two applications have been removed: Video editor PiTiVi and advanced package management tool ‘Synaptic’.

Ubuntu Software Centre 5.0

The Ubuntu Software Centre in Ubuntu 11.10 has been completely revamped, with a more intuitive ‘toolbar’ for navigation; an improved layout and new filtering options for more refined searching of software.

Indicators
It’s all change on the Indicator front with the removal of the Me Menu; the addition of a ‘Clear All’ item to the ‘Messaging Menu’; a new-look user menu, and a new ‘Power Indicator’ providing quick access to attached devices, session controls and system settings.

Installer Changes

The Ubuntu Installer has been streamlined yet again – now adding in a ‘Wifi’ connection step (if applicable) and the option to take a user account photo via your webcam.

Multi-arch

A new feature to Ubuntu 11.10 is “multiarch” support that allows 64bit Ubuntu users to install 32bit applications and utilities on their systems with no jiggery-pokery needed.

One Conf

OneConf is a new Software Centre feature that helps you keep a list of installed applications in sync across multiple computers. To activate it, open the Ubuntu Software Centre (icon on the Dash) and head to “File > Sync between computers…“.

Performance

So it looks prettier than its predecessor, but does it perform better? The short answer is yes: the improvements to Unity and Ubuntu as a whole makes for a responsive and nimble desktop. To get the best out of it you’re still going to need fairly recent hardware, but I wouldn’t expect anyone with less than 1GB of RAM and a above-1Ghz processor to worry too much; my netbook is more than capable of handling Oneiric with more than enough oomph. However, the downsides to 11.10 are in two areas: -

Boot time has increased from Ubuntu 11.04 – but only marginally. Those with SSDs and i7 Quad core processors won’t notice too much of a different, but those on ‘typical’ hardware should expect to wait anywhere between 15 – 25 seconds before the login screen loads. Phoronix have more in-depth details on the performance of Ubuntu 11.10 compared to earlier releases.
Battery drain – the kernel used in Ubuntu 11.10 suffers from a ‘power regression’ that sees it suck the juice from your battery or power source quicker than Eric Northman on Sookie Stackhouse’s blood. Not everyone will be affected by this.

Ice Cream Sandwich leaked video

A lucky guy ordered a Samsung Nexus S on eBay and, upon its arrival, noticed that his new prized possession looked a little... different. Hopping over to the About screen, he was shocked to discover that the device was running ICS.

We can see plenty of influence from both Gingerbread and Honeycomb here, as well as four shortcuts on the bottom (a definite bump from the two found on vanilla 2.3). There's a new Google Apps icon which opens up a tray containing a number of featured services put out by the search giant, and long-pressing the home button brings up a vertical Honeycomb-style multitasking menu. The notification bar, camera UI and other menus also have a much different look. Granted, all of this could just be a custom ROM built to emulate the latest Google dessert, so we can't be a full hundred percent certain that it's authentic. If it's not, at least we can give credit for it being incredibly elaborate.

After this video was posted online, his Nexus S was remotely locked and wiped. :(

Early in the year, they abruptly rocked the boat by introducing the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1, which then received a huge overhaul recently with its design so that they wouldn’t be outdone by another rival. However, things don’t end there as they’re able to fill in the gap between the two models with the Samsung GALAXY Tab 8.9. Employing the same design characteristics and hardware under the hood, it’s going to be intriguing to see how this $469 (RM1496) priced tablet will be able to secure its own identity.

Although it’s almost hard to not like this offering, especially when it’s fashioned after its bigger brother, there are some things that diminish its overall appeal in drastically establishing its own identity.

If you prefer iOS then stop reading the rest of this entry becauseyou don't have a lot of choice now don't you? Just go with iPhone 4 thoughyou'll regret it because iPhone 4S/5 is on the verge of release. I bet theywill 'improve' the specs a little bit but still costs a lot. If you are a businessman who are always want emails on the go, then go for BlackBerry. But the subscription plans might put a leak into your pocker. If you prefer themost popular mobile OS, Android is for you. Although it's not as butter smoothas iOS, it's still good. As an open source OS, you can do so much stuff withit. Rooting, installing custom ROMs, tweaks and lots more.

Speed

Dual core or single core? How many MHz do you really need? There's nothingwrong with going for dual core if you like gaming on your device. Single coreis still good as long as it has 1GHz or more. With this you can run almost all3D games on your device without hiccup. 800MHz is still good for casual gamesand some 3D games but don't expect to run graphic intensive games. 600MHz andlower is just enough to run most 2D games. Multitasking is also a factor. Ifyou like opening lots of apps and just too lazy to close it, then go highspeed.

Design

One of the wow factor of the phone is the design. High end specs won't meana thing if the design sucks. Among the factors to look for is build material,screen size and thickness. HTC & Apple offers the best build material withaluminium and hard plastic that makes it feel premium quality. Though Samsung,Motorola and Nokia always use cheapfeeling plastic, this means the phone won't be much expensive. The screen sizeis also important. If you like watching movies on the go, look for phones with4 inch screen or more. Coupled with high resolution display, watching movieswill be awesome. If you're a casual user, 3-3.5 inches should be good enoughfor you. Then comes the thickness. In my opinion, 15mm and below is good as itdoesn't feel too bulky inside your pocket. Also, phones with physical QWERTYkeyboard tend to be thicker than others.

Camera

Taking pictures is also one of the ways for phones to show it's usefulness.If you don't care about the quality and takes pictures just for Facebook, 3.2MPis good enough for you. The pictures will look okay in bright light but suckson low light. There comes the importance of flash. Whether it is Xenon, singleLED or dual LED, flash makes taking pictures in the dark hassle free. If youare an inspiring photographer, 5MP or more will satisfy your photo craze. Also,video capturing quality is just as important. QVGA (320x240) video will onlylook good on your phone but horrible on larger displays like your computer.Mediocre quality VGA (640x480) is suitable for uploading on the sites likeYouTube. Larger than that, 720p and 1080p is allows for sharp and crisp detail.It's good for sharing with others on your HDTV.

Goodbye HTC Wildfire, hello ZTE Blade

Today I traded my HTC Wildfire for a brand new ZTE Blade. I've been using Wildfire for about 8 months. I had no complaints about it except for the processor & screen resolution. So I've decided to get a new phone. I was considering Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 and LG Optimus One (due to limited budget). But then I saw it, like Edward's daylight sparkle, there it is, the ZTE Blade.

Sure, the quality isn't premium & the camera is only 3 MP without flash. But it has a 600mhz processor (eventhough my Wildfire was overclocked to 710mhz), Adreno 200 GPU which Wildfire lacks, 480x800 relsolution 3.5 inch AMOLED display. It's even thinner & lighter than Wildfire. Another thing is that Cyanogenmod supports Blade, unlike X8 or Optimus One which make finding a good ROM really hard. So I got home, rooted it & installed Cyanogenmod Nightly 179. That was a lot easier than rooting the Wildfire with the AlphaRevX, S-OFF, custom recovery & all that stuff that makes you want to say "HTC, Y U NO UNLOCK???"

I also have been considering becoming an android developer. I've been reading books & thenewboston's Youtube tutorial. Who knows maybe a few months from now I'll be publishing apps on the Android Market.

Internet Explorer users are stupid?

Internet Explorer users have a lower than average IQ, according to research by Consulting firm AptiQuant.

The study gave web surfers an IQ test, then plotted their scores against the browser they used. IE surfers were found to have an average IQ lower than people using Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Users of Camino and Opera rated highest. The report has sparked anger from IE supporters, who have threatened AptiQuant with legal action. Researchers gave over 100,000 web surfers a free online IQ test. Scores were stored in a database along with each person's web browser data.

The results suggested that Internet Explorer surfers had an average IQ in the low eighties. Chrome, Firefox and Safari rated over 100, while minority browsers Opera and Camino had an "exceptionally higher" score of over 120. AptiQuant stressed that using IE doesn't mean you have low intelligence. "What it really says is that if you have a low IQ then there are high chances that you use Internet Explorer," said AptiQuant CEO Leonard Howard. The findings have been treated with scepticism by Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University's Statistical Laboratory: "They've got IE6 users with an IQ of around eighty. That's borderline deficient, marginally able to cope with the adult world. "I believe these figures are implausibly low - and an insult to IE users." However, Mr Howard said he didn't feel threatened by a lawsuit: "A win in a court would only give a stamp of approval and more credibility to our report."

1. Download Root Explorer or any other file manager that can access file systems

2. Download this file & extract media_profile.xml to SD card

3. Open root explorer & copy media_profile.xml

4. Go to system/etc

5. Press Mount R/W and then paste & overwrite

6. Press Mount R/O before exiting

7. Reboot your device & you're done.

Getting GPS to work on Wildfire CyanogenMod 7

As some of you may know, I recently flashed CyanogenMod 7.1 on my Wildfire. But the problem is that the GPS is not working. Luckily I found a solution on CyanogenMod forum & I will guide you with a step-by-step tutorial on how to do it.

1. Download the radio file & transfer it to your SD card (don't extract it)

2. Open ROM Manager. You should have it if you installed CyanogenMod. If you don't, go look for it in the market.

3. Choose "Install ROM from SD card" & select the file.

4. Your phone will reboot several times. Don't panic!

5. Once your phone starts, turn on GPS & try Google Maps or any other application

CyanogenMod 7.1 RC1 review

I finally flashed CyanogenMod 7.1 RC1 on my Wildfire. After looking around a little bit, here are some of the things I noticed.

Good :)

Latest android 2.3.4
Desktop transitions - rotate, page, cube, scatter
DSP manager now features dynamic range compression (google that) and equalizer presets including bass booster, R&B, rock, treble booster, classical and many more

Bad :(

Icons for menu on the home screen are too big. Take almost half the screen
There's a bug in DSP manager when you open it and scroll down, there's a black screen for half a second. It doesn't affect anything as far as I know but it's just annoying
FM radio still requires Bluetooth which is weird

This is still an early release candidate. I hope they will fix the bugs & release the final version soon. But there are some features I really would like to see on CyanogenMod such as 3D drawer like Nexus One & Launcher Pro, FM radio that doesn't need Bluetooth, downloading themes from theme chooser, better camera interface & widescreen video recording (428x240 & 640x360)

Cyanogenmod 7.1 RC1

The first release candidate of CyanogenMod-7.1 is ready for testing!

This version is an update to Android 2.3.4, includes many new features, and brings support to several new devices. CM7.1 now supports various Samsung devices (Galaxy S, Captivate, and Vibrant), the LG Optimus 2X (p990) /T-Mobile G2x (p999), HTC Incredible S (vivo), and Motorola CLIQ/CLIQ XT.

This release candidate should be fairly stable for daily use, but always do a backup first in case something goes wrong. You can help out by giving them feedback on the forums and reporting bugs at the issue tracker.

The best way to install CM7.1-RC1 is to use ROM Manager, or you can manually download it here.

With our review of the Salsa being less than spicy, largely thanks to the price, with similar specs and a physical QWERTY, all at a lower price-point, we're hopeful the HTC ChaCha's the Facebook phone with all the right moves.

Wildfire 2.2 root tutorial

So after a full day of hardwork, I finally rooted my HTC Wildfire (2.2). Here is an idiot-proof step by step tutorial for you. Make it YOUR phone again in less than 30 minutes.

S-OFF using AlphaRevX

1. Go to http://alpharev.nl/x/beta/ & download the windows version

2. When it asks you for the serial, enter your phone's serial number. Go to Settings > About phone & enter your serial. Copy the code given into notepad

3. Make sure you turn on USB debugging in Settings > Application > Development

4. Install the HTC Driver. Mine is in the memory card that came with the phone

5. Extract & run alpharevx.exe. Use the code given earlier. Then connect your phone. It should detect & your phone should display USB debugging mode

6. Wait for it to complete. Once it is completed, you can remove your phone.

7. To check turn off your phone. Then press volume down & power. On top it should display alpharevx & s-off

Clockwork recovery

1. This is to enable you to install a custom rom, and also for backup

2. Get the fastboot tool for windows

3. Copy the fastboot file you downloaded to the alpharevx folder you extracted earlier. Copy the folder to drive C so it is easier to run command prompt. Rename the folder to wildfire

4. Download the recovery for Wildfire. Extract & rename it to wildfire.img

5. Open command prompt. Type cd c:/wildfire & fastboot flash recovery wildfire.img
6. Download & install HBOOT driver from unrevoked. Go into bootloader (volume down & power), select fastboot. Connect your phone & it will display fasboot usb cable

7. Done. To check go to bootloader & select recovery

Rooting your phone

1. Download this file & put it in you SD card. Don't extract it

2. Go to clockword recovery & select Install From SD Card > Choose From SD Card
3. Select su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip & choose yes

4. After completed, go back & reboot

5. You should have Super User

6. An alternative way to root is to use Gingerbreak

7. Open it using any file manager, I used Astro. Install it

8. Open the app & select root. Remember to turn on USB debugging & insert SD card

9. I waited 15 minutes, go frustrated & pressed back. It says the phone is rooted but cannot reboot.

The Sony Ericsson W8 is an attempt to revive the Walkman brand and bring it to the world of modern smartphones with the help of Android, its rather outdated 2.1 Eclair version, to be exact. Built by using the Xperia X8 as a template, the W8 promises to deliver outstanding audio performance while being an affordable entry-level Android device at the same time. At a glance, the handset grabs the attention with its brightly colored back panel and its easy to use interface, but will it leave a good impression in our minds once we are done playing with it? Lets take a closer look and find out for ourselves.

To wrap things up, we liked the Sony Ericsson Xperia W8 Walkman for being a simple to use entry-level smartphone and for coming with a pair of nice earphones out of the box. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much backing up its Walkman brand, let alone bring it back to life. The Xperia W8 is an easy way of joining the Android team, but the aging Android 2.1 Eclair version that it comes with will simply not give you the full potential of the platform. We would only recommend getting one if you are a music lover who needs an affordable smartphone that can double as an audio player.

Salsa is your friend. You put it on nachos; you do it on the dance floor. The word conjures up images of socializing, music and fun times. We're guessing that's why Salsa is the name of HTC's latest social media, and more specifically, Facebook phone. With more explicit Facebook integration than most, the HTC Salsa, along with its sibling, the HTC ChaCha, carries a physical Facebook button to tie whatever's going on in your hand to the world of Facebook. Sitting between the HTC Wildfire S and the HTC Desire S, is the Facebook button enough to make us want some Salsa on our social networking or would we be better off ignoring this friend request and going for a more established model?

So if you're looking for a phone in this price range, you will fall into one of two groups, those who should get an HTC Salsa or those who'd be better served with an HTC Desire S or another similarly specced handset. If you consider your phone's primary function to update your status, send pictures to your wall and share music, then the HTC Salsa could certainly help speed up your social workflow. It's also a good size, well put together and ships with a nice camera. The main issue we have which we outlined earlier however is the price-point. Nuzzled between the HTC Wildfire S and the HTC Desire S, it's far nearer the upper end of that spectrum than the little blue button would justify. Perhaps when the price drops we'll be less hesitant to recommend it, but until then, unless you're totally hooked on your Facebook, the HTC Salsa will remain in the shadows of its bigger brother, Facebook button or no Facebook button.

Not content with being second best, Samsung went back to the drawing board after Apple unveiled the iPad 2 to the world with its impressive thin profile and premium construction. Of course, Samsung isn’t content knowing that they’ve been one-upped, and instead, they reworked the design of their Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to meet the new standard set by its chief rival.

At first glance, there’s no denying that people are going to be enthralled by the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 even more when they see that it’s the thinnest and lightest tablet on the market. However, once those feelings soak in and disperse over time, they’ll soon find themselves at a standstill questioning some of its omissions. Specifically, its gorgeous display and thin profile take precedence immediately, but when you find that it’s missing some common amenities that are perceived to be standard amongst Android tablets, like a microSD card slot and microHDMI port, you get a sense that it’s being reserved with its offerings. Not everyone might need those two specific items, especially when the Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a sizable display that's perfect for viewing, but when you see previous tablets offering them, it's only expected to be available going forward.

HTC strikes a fantastic balance in the HTC Sensation. It has the build quality design, the UI and the power under the hood to check all the boxes. The question everyone wants answered is: is it better than the Samsung Galaxy S II? To that we'd say, potentially, it could be better for you. With both being great bits of kit that really push the boat out in terms of power and usability, the HTC Sensation's Sense 3.0 UI feels more considered and complete than Samsung's TouchWiz 4.0. We also like the fact that the build feels considerably more solid, while the qHD screen manages to output sharper looking picture visuals. That said, many will still prefer the thinner form factor and punchier display of the Galaxy S II. It's safe to say that neither would be a disappoining choice, with these handsets being amongst the best on the market today.
